Why does iPad cost more than double in Dubai?

The much hyped about Apple gadget is now available for sale in Dubai stores. But it seems buyers in Dubai have to pay a heavier price than the customers in the US.
According to The National, given below are the comparative costs of buying an iPad from a store in Dubai vs the purchase price in the US.
16GB model – AED 3,899 in Dubai (approx $1088) and only $499 in US
32GB model – AED 4,699 in Dubai (approx $1,279) and only $ 599 in US
64BG model – AED 5,499 in Dubai (approx $ 1,497) and only $ 699 in US
It isn’t clear why the iPad has to cost so much more for Dubai buyers. The retailers are probably shooting themselves in the foot by charging exorbitant prices – people would rather buy it from US and have it shipped and still save a lot of money.

Why the high price? Because they can! iPad is not officially in UAE yet. All iPads sold are gray market (outside the authorized channel) and with no UAE warranty. Buyer beware. If you want the latest and greatest, you pay for it.
