The race to rebuild reputations in the UAE construction industry
0 Comments Published by DubaiLime October 6th, 2007 in People, Uncategorized, Work.Construction companies in Dubai have a bad wrap. They poor reputations stem from appalling working conditions for labourers teamed with long hours, withholding workers passports and bad pay – if any pay at all.
It’s not surprising workers are now saying no to UAE working conditions and returning to their own countries for recruitment.
The UAE’s construction boom however, is unyielding. It desperately needs engineering expertise and construction labour to complete projects on time and meet the government’s ambitious plans for an increasing population. The recruitment drive is on going and in order to fill positions and consequently meet these deadlines, construction companies need to take a good look at how they treat their workers.
Recruitment agencies to the rescue!
One area that seems to be helping to improve construction and engineering standards in the UAE are specialized recruitment companies.
These companies have first hand knowledge of how engineering and construction companies operate and act as a middle man between the employer and employee.
These recruitment middle men can represent a unified stance for the construction and engineering workers on their books. If workers continue to use recruitment agents, the recruitment agents can act as something like a union, ensuring standards are being met and implementing processes to control pay and working conditions.
For recruitment companies in Dubai, the buck doesn’t stop when the candidate starts the job. They should act as supporters throughout the first few months for both the employee and employer, ensuring the relationship is healthy and thus ensuring continued business.
