Apple iPhone Dubai - Cant wait to buy iPhone in Dubai and the UAE - iPhone hacks the solution?

Sure there are a lot of you out there in Dubai and the UAE who’ve had their imaginations captured by the Apple iPhone (tech geek, biz whiz or social poser…the sleek and nifty iphone seems to do the trick for them all). Its been a while since the iPhone was released in the US (Apple + AT&T) but indications have it that it may be a few more months before the Apple iPhone is readily available on the market here in Dubai (and the rest of the United Arab Emirates). Apple plans to sell 10 million iPhones next year and capture 1% of the global handset market…and the competition is not far behind. Of course, there are great smartphone and PDF-phone alternatives to the iPhone… but none match the slick interface and user experience!

So just how soon can we get an iPhone and start using it in Dubai? The recent plethora of hacks may be just the answer…the latest being a simple user-friendly unlock by iPhoneSimFree (this hack didnt involve tinkering with hardware or complicated software fixes … however, shortly after the cloaked distribution of their hack, hackers around the world had already copied the solution and released it for free)

For those of you unaware of the reasons for all the hacks… Apple has an exclusive agreement with AT&T to provide cellular services for the iPhone..so you can buy an iPhone in the US but it can only be activated with AT&T…. so even if you brought it to Dubai, you wouldn’t be able to use the phone / calling and other features… the hack allows the iPhone to be used with other networks / SIM cards / providers. Note, however, that Apple hasn’t officially commented on these hacks and their future firmware updates may just end up disabling any hacks you’ve applied …and some hacks out there can potentially “brick” your phone! However, all things said and done… its an appealing idea to apply a simple iPhone hack and use it months ahead of anyone else If you’re the obsessive compulsive type or just a tech freak…(with the discretionary income to match) then the iPhone hacks may be just the solution to use it in Dubai.

And some savvy users are already well ahead of the game…

A report from Arabianbusiness.com (6th September 2007):

Apple’s latest must-have gadget, the iPhone, has made it to the UAE. But only grey market retailers can sell it, and you will need to pay 500 UAE dirhams ($136) to an illegal hacker to make it work with an Etisalat or Du sim card. An anonymous Dubai resident, speaking to weekly freesheet Xpress, claimed that he paid a total of 3626 dirhams ($987) for the phone, an American AT&T annual contract and the fee to a hacker. He now boasts a fully functioning Etisalat iPhone months before the device will be legally released in the UAE.

Ahmad, a 24-year-old media executive, has been happily watching YouTube, surfing the Net, calling and texting friends with his new iPhone in Dubai. The phone from Apple has arrived in the UAE through the back channels – long before its scheduled debut in the Middle East and Europe. In a demo to XPRESS, Ahmad showed how the hacked iPhone works with an etisalat SIM card – and theoretically, with its rival du, too. “It’s nice to be one of the first to have this baby in Dubai,” said Ahmad, whose friend bought it for him from the US with the AT&T line, which cost another $250 (Dh918).

Since the introduction of the Apple iPhone and more importantly, the iPhone Hack which allows for usage with your chosen service provider, the Dubai market has been flooded with people trying to make a quick buck off the sales of hacked iPhones. Please be aware that the actual base sale price of the Apple iPhone instrument in the US is only $399, i.e. approx AED 1,500. The hack costs a little extra but the total price is nowhere near the absurd prices that the iPhones have been trading at in Dubai. They started off very high in the beginning, at approx AED 4,000 and now the price averages from between AED 1,800 to AED 3,000 … readers are urged to exercise caution, good judgement and discretion when engaging in such transactions. Please also be aware that any firware updates made to hacked iPhones effectively “bricks” them…ie they stop working. Carapelli happens to be 500m away from where I live but unfortunately they quit selling the iPhone. Got 1 unit from accross the creek for DHS2400.

As a non-familiar with Mac/Apple, is there anyone can help me on this product to get the following simple task done please? They are:-

From Gulf News:

French law, with a little help from Orange, the telecommunications company that recently won the right to be the exclusive network provider for the iPhone in France, has been making it hard for Steve Jobs and Co to introduce the iPhone into the country.

This may have been like just a little regulatory hurdle to some, but the iPhone’s fate in France could have consequences here in the UAE.

The big issue for Apple is a French law that doesn’t allow network providers to require blood money, a.k.a. subscriptions, with the phones they sell. Under the law, network providers such as Orange must also provide unlocked versions of the phones.

They can sell the unlocked phones in France, thereby making France the biggest retailer of iPhones in the world, or they don’t sell them in France at all. Who, after all, is going to want a locked iPhone when an unlocked version is available for the same price? Apple’s entire marketing strategy will have a meltdown if unlocked iPhones hit the market.
